Miles of Pennies

Dear Parents,
Last year the Kalona and Washington Township Optimist Clubs worked with Mid-Prairie elementary students to raise funds to help kids with childhood cancer.  Our healthy kids raised $2,000 to help children with cancer!  They worked hard to help children who can’t help themselves, and learned how to be charitable in the process.
One mile of pennies (one penny set to another penny stretched out for a mile) is $844.80.  We are asking for your help in raising this amount again this year.  The pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and even dollar bills will help make this goal.  Please give your child a few extra chores around the house in order for them to earn the money.  This will give them pride in being able to help with their charitable gifts.
The  “Mile of Pennies” program is set up by the Optimist Foundation, working hand in hand with Johns Hopkins University.  The money sent to Johns Hopkins goes for study and research and patient care.  This year the Optimist Clubs will have the Optimist Foundation divide the money we raise, with half going to Johns Hopkins University and the other half going to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital cancer ward.
The Kalona Optimist Club will match penny for penny what is raised up to $1,500!  That’s a great start!  Bring the money to your classrooms between October 4 and November 1.
Thank you for letting our Optimist Clubs work with your kids!
Sincerely,
Denny Phares and J.D. Boyd, Optimist Members
