This Weeks News!

It was another exciting week in 3Y!  I can tell we are all getting excited about the holidays as well!  We continued working on identifying the sequence of events  and determining what was important in reading!  We read about The Pilgrims settling in Plymouth and how John Bradford had to ask the Native Americans for medicine!

In Math we have been working on reading and writing decimal numbers.  We have been learning about the numbers that go on the right of the decimal!  The tenths and hundreths place values!  We used different base ten blocks to help us understand this!

In science we finished up our science videos (See previous post for the link!)  and started our Electrical Circuits unit.  Today we were given a wire, D battery and a lightbulb and had to figure out how to get the lightbulb to light!  We did it and were very excited to figure out how to!

We have been continuing practicing our play!  The third graders are VERY excited about this and doing a great job!

Check out some pictures of us hard at work this week!

Holiday Party

The excitement level is already high (and is rapidly climbing!) in third grade as Christmas/winter break approaches.  Some dates to be aware of:

Thursday, Dec. 18 - we've filled the Hawk's nest with tickets, so KES students will be rewarded with a trip to the roller skating rink!  Third graders will skate in the afternoon.

Monday, Dec. 22 - we have  a fun surprise planned for our third grade friends on this day at school - watch for details coming soon!   We also have our play at 2:00!

Tuesday, Dec. 23 - this is our last day before vacation.  A LOT is happening on this date:
1. We'll have an all school carol sing for staff and students (NOT grandparents' day this year - that will be in May)

2. Our classroom party!  Third grade will have our holiday party from 10:30 - 11:30. If you'd like to send snacks or paper products or plan and activity/craft/game to lead at the party, you can sign up to do so at the link below:

Remember, in order to help at the party, you need to be on the approved volunteer list. :)  If you have questions about how to use sign up genius, leading an activity at the party, or the volunteer list, let me know.

3. After lunch, the third graders are going to sing Christmas carols at the Kalona Rotary! We'll board the bus after our recess, and will return to school around 1:00.

4. Finally, the 23rd is an early out day.  School will be dismissed at 1:25.

We are about finished with our Public Service Announcements for science!  Here is a link to the ones we have uploaded thus far!

Another Great Week!

It has been another great week in 3Y!  We took our Unit 4 math test and increased our class average by 82% from the pretest!!  (12% to 94%!!!!)  WOW!!!  What a brilliant group of kids!

We have now moved on to Unit 5 in math and will be focusing on the following learning targets:
1.  I can read and write very large numbers.
2.  I can read and write decimals.
3.  I can use base 10 blocks to work with decimals.
4.  I can add and subtract 2-digit numbers.
5.  I can use ballpark estimates.
6.  I can add and subtract extended facts.

We chant these in math each morning so that we can practice saying that "I can!"

We also finished up Unit 2 in reading and have started Unit 3, our learning targets for reading are going to be:
1. I can follow agreed upon rules for class discussions.
2.  I can determine text importance.
3.  I can identify the sequence of events in a text.

In science we are still working on creating our public service announcements.  We have planned and are starting to shoot our videos!

I am so proud of the progress 3Y is making!  Thank you for all the support at home!

Have a great weekend!

With word work we continued working on words patterns and recognizing these patterns in words we are reading!

We also had a Veteran's Day assembly and learned about different equipment used and how to fold a flag!

In science we have started working on planning our public service announcements we will be taping about water conservation!
